Making a space for digital creatives

Two of the Eastern Vale's libraries have opened new creative spaces for digital crafting

Makerspace, based in both Barry and Penarth, offers state-of-the-art tools and equipment to help people of all ages improve their skills.

They offer free sessions as well as workshops during the school holidays.

Simon Alexander, Makerspace development officer, said: "We’ve been really inspired by the response from the creative communities around our library service since we launched our Makerspaces in Penarth and Barry."

"From 3D printing models of Napoleonic warships, game characters, replacement axles for RC cars and conceptual art pieces to illustrations and signage - the enthusiasm from people of all ages and the connections we’ve built with local artists and entrepreneurs drives us to keep developing the service, and to share it further around the Vale."

Both Makerspace hubs include a 3D printer, a heat press, a DSLR camera and a Cricut Maker 3 - although visitors can also bring along their own materials or buy them directly from the Barry and Penarth libraries.

A number of events are held throughout the year, such as 3D printing and coding workshops for children and teenagers.

Inga K, a local artist, is among those who have been getting to grips with the laser cutting techniques at Barry Library.

“As a local artist without access to this technology, I found the experience eye-opening and inspiring. It has expanded my understanding of opportunities for collaboration and creativity, allowing me to take my ideas from the sketchbook to product design.”

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, cabinet member for the arts, added: "I’m thrilled to see our dedicated Makerspaces thriving at Barry and Penarth Libraries."

"This project shows that libraries are not just about books – but are a launchpad for creativity and learning."

"Makerspace is the perfect example of how the council is supporting our community by providing innovative resources for gaining lifelong skills and new experiences."
