The clean-up operation is continuing in the Vale of Glamorgan in the wake of Storm Darragh.

Around 40,000 homes and businesses across Wales are still without electricity as of Monday morning, after heavy rain and hurricane-force winds struck on Saturday.

Gusts of around 72mph were recorded in St Athan, while top speeds of 93mph were reported in the Aberdaron and Capel Curig areas of Gwynedd.

Vale Council says most of its services are back to normal - although some areas of parks and country parks are closed while work takes place to make them safe.

A council spokesperson said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to our teams and the emergency services that have been working all weekend to clear fallen trees, debris from damaged buildings, and keep the Vale safe."

"We’d also like to thank everyone who helped by reporting storm damage in their area."

Clean up work is expected to continue over the next few days - and the council is asking residents to report any ongoing issues by visiting their website or by calling 01446 700111.

Vale MP Kanishka Narayan said he was aware that some areas are still without power.

He said he has been touch with the National Grid "to seek urgent prioritisation, especially for vulnerable households".

The Labour MP added: "I am immensely grateful to all emergency services and to Vale of Glamorgan Council for responding to exceptionally difficult circumstances brought on by Storm Darragh."
